Rehabilitation and Upgrade Of The Fort Reno Pumping Station

OVERVIEW

DC Water will perform improvements to the Fort Reno Pumping Station located in northwest DC. Originally constructed in 1978, the pumping station, along with Elevated Tank No. 2, serves the 4th high service area west of Rock Creek Park. Through this project, DC Water will improve water quality and system reliability, increase water pressure in some areas, and maintain adequate flows throughout the system.

SCOPE OF WORK

Major work items include, but are not limited to: 

  • Replacement of pump controls, electrical service, emergency back-up generator and valves, as needed 
  • Installation of valves to serve Elevated Tank No. 2 
  • Upgrade of two remote pressure sensing sites 
  • Electrical and communication conduits to facilitate installation of a security system

SCHEDULE

The estimated start and completion dates, as indicated below, are based on a preliminary construction schedule and may change according to final issuance of all necessary permits. 

  • Estimated construction start: May 2011 
  • Estimated construction completion: August 2017 
  • Normal work hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday 
  • Contractor may work at night or on weekends, dependent upon needed tie-in work or inclement weather

IMPORTANT INFORMATION 

  • If a planned temporary water service shut-off is necessary, affected residents will be notified 48 hours in advance. 
  • Service interruptions will be minimal, typically lasting between two to four hours. 
  • DC Water will work to ensure minimal disruption during the construction operations and will restore all work sites to their original condition. 
  • Noise and dust levels adjacent to the construction site will be closely monitored.

TRAFFIC PLANS 

  • Lane closures may be required daily (8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) and traffic plans will be approved by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). 
  • At various times during construction, “no-parking” signs may need to be placed in certain areas in and around the job site. Notifications regarding “no-parking” zones will be posted 72 hours prior to construction, as required by DDOT.

PARTNERS

DC Water is currently working closely with the National Park Service to ensure minimal disruption during this project. Public outreach will be provided to various Advisory Neighborhood Commissions.
